When you make a big life decision, have you ever tried to pray about it? Did you end up feeling more confused and frustrated than when you started, because you couldn’t figure out God’s answer?
Here are a few steps to help you hear what God is saying:
STEP 1: Do your best to be neutral. Try to get to a place where you are okay with either decision. This can be hard, and you might have to ask God for help. However, if you can stay neutral and open to either option, it will help you hear what God is telling you.
STEP 2: Do a pros and cons list. Maybe you’ve already done a list, but this one is a little different than the norm. To start, first narrow your decision down to two black and white choices – option A or option B. For example: “Buy this house (A) or build a house (B).”
Then write a pros and cons list for both option A and option B. As you do your list, pray and ask God to open up your mind to the things he wants you to add – things you might not have thought about before.
You may have some overlap between pros and cons, but that’s okay. The idea is to stretch you and get you thinking about things from a different angle.
STEP 3: For one entire day, pretend you have already made your decision, and you chose option A. Ask God to make you wise and place His will on your heart. Pay attention to how you feel and what you think about, having “made” this decision. The next day, live as though you chose option B. Again, pray for God’s wisdom. How do you feel in comparison?
Doing these three steps can help you make a decision while discerning God’s will for your life. If we seek God and His will first, all else will fall into place.
